The EU needs you: nearly 90,000 vacancies open for Fitness Professionals

Looking for a new profession? The Fitness industry might be for you: a dynamic sector with an annual growth rate of 3-4% and great potential for personal development. Based on Cedefop’s latest statistics, nearly 70,000 fitness and recreation instructors and program leaders were needed in seven EU member states end of 2018, making up 79% of the EU employment market. These figures point towards nearly 90,000 vacant positions in the fitness industry in all 28 member states in the European Union.

The highest demand for fitness professionals was identified in Italy (0.6%), however, absolute figures are the highest in France: between 1 July 2018 and 31 December 2018, 26,000 positions were open for fitness instructors and programme leaders, followed by the United Kingdom with 19,000 online job ads. Due to the differences in demand, harmonized qualifications are crucial to assure mutual recognition by employers and to fill employment vacancies in the member states.

EuropeActive’s accreditation programme EREPS facilitates this process by applying qualification levels (EREPS levels) to national and sectoral qualificaions which are informally linked to the European Qualifications Framework. Furthermore, the organisation runs an EU-funded activity (Blueprint project) which currently explores possible ways to link Fitness and Outdoor qualifications to National Qualification Frameworks. The overall goal of the project is to support labour market mobility within the European Fitness sector.

Cedefop is an agency of the European Union for the Development of Vocational Training. They provide research and advise to the Eu institutions and one recent tool is Skills-OVATE, which provides pre-defined dashboard visualisations for seven countries: the Czechia, Spain, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Data are based on online job vacancies gathered from a defined list of online sources, including private job portals, public employment service portals, recruitment agencies, online newspapers, employers’ portals etc. Data were gathered between 1 July 2018 and 31 December 2018.
